How to optimize smartphone battery

Top-notch Android smartphones like the  Samsung Galaxy S5 and  HTC One (M8)  are powerful, but unfortunately, they don't have endless battery life. In fact, many Android phone users would be happy to make it through a single day, hoping that a nightly recharge is sufficient. Sadly, it sometimes isn't. A number of factors have conspired to reduce gadget endurance over the past several years. Thinner designs with less room for batteries, larger and brighter screens, faster quad-core processors, more software that runs in the background, and power-hungry GPS radios all share responsibility. The move from 3G to 4G networks a few years ago—particularly of the LTE variety—has also taken its toll. But there's much more to poor battery life results than that. Fortunately, there's plenty you  can  do to stem the flow of juice from your Android device. To write this article, I used a  Google Nexus 5 , as it's running the latest version of Android 4.4 KitKat with no extr

Hooray: Lenovo Ditches Custom UI, Switches to Stock Android

Lenovo  is ditching its Vibe Pure UI in favor of stock Android. Righteous. According to Lenovo, the company listened to its customers and decided that removing its custom skin was for the best. If you want to see how Lenovo does with this move, the first phone launching with the stock Android experience will be the  K8 Note , but here in the US, don’t expect to find it in your local carrier store. Not only will this clear up the user experience, but updates for the device may roll out more steadily. As mentioned by Lenovo’s Anuj Sharma to  Gadgets 360 , each device in the K lineup will indeed receive the Android O update, but timing will differ depending on which processor the phone runs. What we have done in the last 11 months is we looked at what we had in terms of software perspective. We have been close to the consumers and we saw what they were asking for. There was a certain trend and we have now decided to cut the Vibe Pure UI off from our phones. So you will now get the st

Samsung commences production of iPhone 8 OLED panels ahead of September debut

In preparation for the release of the  iPhone  8,  Samsung  is ramping up production of its OLED panels that will be in the newest flagship from Apple. ADVERTISEMENT The report comes from  ETNews , which revealed  Samsung  is kicking off production of the OLED panels at seven production lines to  full capacity this month. Samsung Display is the lone supplier of OLED panels Apple is using for this generation of iPhones. Each production line usually manufactures around 15,000 panels per month, but that number is rising to 105,000 panels to keep up with demand. That’s a production spike of 700-percent. At maximum capacity and with 100-percent yield rate,  Samsung  Display can produce up to 130 million 5.8-inch OLED displays a year. But OLED displays are difficult to produce at a mass scale, bringing down the yield rate closer to “at least” 60-percent, according to the report. This is leading to concerns about  iPhone  8 shortages due to production delays when it becomes available in t

Here is the first live look at the Google Pixel 2

This is our best look yet at the smaller Google Pixel 2, known internally as Walleye. We've been talking about the  new Pixel phones  for months now, as the behind-the-scenes drama has been not only engrossing but highly divisive. Earlier in the year, we heard that HTC would be making both Pixel sequels as it did the first generation, but subsequent rumors suggested that Google decided to partner with LG,  likely for access to its OLED panels , for the larger Pixel XL 2. Now,  thanks to Evan Blass of @evleaks and VentureBeat , we know what the smaller Pixel, codenamed Walleye, will look like. In fact, if you're an OG Pixel owner, you already know what it looks like, as the sequel bears a striking resemblance. The image above, which we've lightened to expose the darkened front of the phone, reveals a device that looks like a slightly squarer ( Note-ier? ) version of the  Google Pixel , with ample bezels above and below the screen, a dual-toned back with a glass inlay nea

Xiaomi’s soft feet have run this marathon of development for its new mobile applications chipset series called Surge. The Surge chips is supposedly due out soon in future devices across multiple manufacturers, but if there’s a spotlight to turn on, it’d be for Xiaomi’s own Mi 6C. The rumors about the phone getting the Surge S2 have been ongoing and butting up against word of the Snapdragon 660 making it in there, but we do have a few more details on the chip itself thanks to Weibo tech sources. The SoC is built on a 16nm fabrication with two sets of ARM Cortex cores: four A73 at a top speed of 2.2GHz and four A53 cores at 1.8GHz. The phone itself is said to feature a dual-camera system with one sensor rated at 12 megapixels and the other at 5 megapixels. Pricing is said to begin at ¥1,999 ($298) for a variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Add another ¥500 for 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The wait goes on.
